Japanese TTS has a mora timing problem that most Western-trained developers don’t notice until a Japanese colleague points it out. Japanese is mora-timed – each mora gets equal duration. The long vowel in “おかあさん” is phonemically distinct from the short vowel; compressing it changes the word. The geminate consonant in “きって” (stamp) is distinct from “kite” (come). These aren’t accent differences – they’re meaning distinctions.
